long weekend

For the last three weeks, Aaron has been asked to work Saturdays along with the usual Monday through Friday. With only one day weekends, he spends a lot of that day sleeping (he loves his sleep) and heads right back to work the next day. Not fun, but the paychecks have been nice. Here in Canada they celebrate Good Friday, so he had a paid day off, along with not having to work Saturday and Sunday, it's looking to be a nice long weekend for him. But wait, there's more! Earlier this week he got promoted. Not a bigger paycheck, since he's still within the three-month trial period, but a shift in work schedule and a few different responsibilities. He'll now be working Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 - 4:30 (instead of 7:30 - 4:00). Same amount of hours as before, just a different day off and an extra half hour of sleeping in. We'll make it work. So that means MONDAY off as well - a REALLY long weekend for him!

To start the weekend off right, I was tired of sitting around the house and suggested that we go take a walk. Not around the block, like I've already done, but there are parks and paths around the city to get a bit more nature into our lives. Aaron drove us over to one near his Dad's house, and as we got out of the car ... oops! We locked the keys inside! Luckily Aaron had a spare .. back at the apartment, and at least I had my house keys on me. Without a cell phone we were forced to walk to his Dad's. A majority of it was through the park, and it wasn't more than a few miles. I would have included pictures, but forgot the camera. And still, there are NO signs of spring. No leaves on the trees and no green ANYTHING. Blue skies and lots of birds chirping, but no flowers or plant life. Regardless, it was a nice walk, and probably a good thing we locked the keys inside. We finally got around to picking up more of Aaron's stuff (like his computer) and got the very tall spider lamp to light the living room - which we wouldn't have been able to move without his Dad's truck. I knew exactly where the key was at home, and we got back into the vehicle no problem.

We were instructed to immediately go find one of those magnetic key holders to put under the vehicle, so the spare is right there for future use. Sounded like a really good idea, so we stopped by a couple of dollar stores and found nothing. But next to one of the dollar stores was Goodwill - and we found two cookbooks, two novels, and five VHS tapes. And then we stopped by Canadian Tire and found the key box. And then we went home and cooked a recipe from one of the new books.

Today we have plans for watching general conference, taking some bottles and cans in, going to ball practice, and having friends over to work on Otafest stuff. (Otafest is the anime convention they have every year here in Calgary, and Aaron puts together and runs a handful of "game shows" that happen over those two days. It all goes down at the end of May, so he's wanting to prepared well in advance.) Tomorrow will include more conference, a surprise egg hunt for Aaron, and dinner at his Dad's. For Monday? Sleeping in, for sure, hopefully another walk, and probably friends over in the evening for games.

There's flowers popping up at my house! Tulips coming up through the front lawn (rogues, courtesy of the neighbor, but who's to complain about flowers?), buds on the lilac bush and green branches on the raspberries. You need to bug that condo board to do some landscaping!

But it isn't just around the apartment .. it's everywhere around Calgary. I haven't seen any flowers or green trees ANYWHERE around. We were in Fish Creek Park yesterday and everything was dead. No green.

Well buds are brown, green shoots are down low, trying to break through the bleak. Posted a pic of our tulips for you!

The 'old-timers' pointed out today that we really haven't had ANY moisture to encourage green growth yet this year either, be it rain or a good dump of snow!

It's true. When I was here in the past, we'd generally have a good dump of snow every few weeks during the spring to green up the grass. But we haven't had a good dump of snow since January this year! And I think I saw it rain .. once? Here's hoping for a wet spring so we have at least a slightly green summer.

And it doesn't help that I'm so used to the green. Back in Oregon it's basically green year round with all the moisture we get there. I miss it.
